Re: Migrating VMs from ESXi 4.1 to 5.5 to new hardware

Do you use EVC?

If so you can create a new cluster at the same EVC level then migrate the vms over.  Once all vms are migrated upgrade EVC to the new level.  Once each vm is powered off then powered on again it will take the new level.

You can also add the hosts to the same cluster.  Migrate all vms to the new hosts, remove old hosts then upgrade the EVC level.

For tools and hardware upgrades, I like setting the parameter in each vm under options, vmware tools to automatically upgrade tools on a clean restart.  In the Web interface you can do something similar to schedule hardware upgrades on clean restarts, but do not upgrade to hardware version 10 until you are on vcenter 6.  If you do you will not be able to modify vm settings except from Web interface.  That changes back (mostly) with vcenter 6.

If you do not use evc.

Create a new cluster with evc set to on.  Then you will have to power off the vms move them to the new cluster and power them on.  (Same process to move AMD to Intel or vice versa).
