Re: New VMware Tools for XP in 6.7U1?

At the time I am writing this, the latest is VMware Tools 10.3.2 "12 SEP 2018 | Build 9925305", and can be applied by just running the .exe from inside the Guest OS.

So far I have only used this on 2012R2 VMs, I haven't bothered with the 2008R2/2003/Win7 VMs.

Unless you're having a terribly noticable issue, I'd just suppress it, especially for a Xp VM of which even super early VMware Tools worked fine on it.

P.S.-Don't uninstall a previous version of the tools. It is designed to upgrade over it, or else you will lose the MAC addresses of your vmxnet3 adapters.

I think it is a bug. I get the same prompt with an XP VM on VMware Player 14.1.3 on Windows. It also gets prompted for new VMware Tools.

But the legacy Windows OS VMware Tools (pre-Vista, pre2K) has been frozen for around 2 years. So version 10.0.12 (10252) is the last version for Windows XP VMs.

https://blogs.vmware.com/vsphere/2016/10/introducing-vmware-tools-10-1-10-0-12.html

https://packages.vmware.com/tools/versions

I don't know if ESXi 6.7U1 has the same problem with reading the tools manifest files (chances are it is). But on the XP VM on Player 14.1.3 on Windows it had a problem getting the manifest information; whereas for VMware Player 15.0.0; it gets through to read the manifest file(s). So you can check the vmware.log of the XP VM see whether it manage to read the manifest file or not.

This is from Player 15.0.0 of an XP VM and it manages to read the manifest file and set a minimum version as 8384 whereas a newer version 10252 is already installed.

same issue here,  have tried even bumping the global level to error (and ofcourse reloading),  but my remote syslog server is filled with logs of a much lower level than error  (more like debug,  and mainly Rhttpproxy,  which i assume is users on the web gui, but many leave it open).

this needs to be addressed.

ESXI 6.5 root account

I have a bad feeling you all will tell me I am out of Luck but I have run into an issue.

I have an ESXi Hypervisor running at home.  It is the free version running on an older Dell PC I have.  I only really have 2 active VM's.  Several Months ago I installed 6.5 on this newer older Dell and moved my disks to the new system.  I got most things set up just like under 6.0 and left it alone.  I was going to show my son something in the ESXi interface when I tried to log in as root I could not.  I am 99.999% sure I have not been hacked and I have not changed the password.  When I looked online I see the issue of expiring password.  I assume that is what happened to the root account.  I am hoping there is a way to get into the box.  When I am at the console and hit the F2 key it prompts for a login.  My root password does not work there.  Any ideas?  I really do not want to lose my VM's and I know that one of the VM's is on the same drive as the boot drive.  Any recommendations or help would be greatly appreciated.

I am really Lucky!

I kept looking over the internet and found this VMware KB ESXi Passwords and Account Lockout   That is this really helped me except when I read the part about password complexity.  Then it hit me that I was leaving the special character out of the password.  I tried again with the special character and got in.  Now on to see if I can make another account to get in with that has enough access to reset root if this ever happens again.

Hardware for esxi 5.5-6.7

First of all I want to apologize for my ignorance as I am new to VMware.  I got access to an old dell Poweredge 1950  server for my home lab.  Without checking the compatibility list I tried to  install esxi 6.7 from usb using Rufus.  Part way through it gagged with an error about the Intel Xeon E540 2.33 GHZ processors not compatible.  I  checked the list and  saw this server was  compatible with 5.5 but no  further.  So I downloaded and created  the  5.5  image  on  usb and  everything installed fine.  It was a little difficult to find the 5.5 client which made me start  wondering.  I'm setting up a lab environment to test out some simulators (storage) from Netapp, EMC etc.  Just basically to get familiar with management of different diskarrays etc.  I'm hoping all the  simulators will run on the  older 5.5.

But this rackable server sitting in my spare  room sounds  like  a jet  engine and it is extremely heavy and takes  a ton of floor space and will probably never run the newer VMware  versions.   Just wondering if anyone knows  of  a  good affordable workstation (vendor and model) or small server (used, ebay or something) that would run esxi 6.7.  I need 32+ GB of ram but don't need much compute power or disk  space as this is just for my small  home lab.  I'm hoping someone has  gotten  esxi  6.7 running on one of these smaller boxes and can share some info.  While I'm at  it I'll probably want to install and learn vserver as  well.  Thanks.

My recommendation would be to look for a 12th Gen Dell server on eBay as these can come fairly cheap. If you don't need much more RAM than 32, don't need beefy CPUs, and don't need internal storage, you could probably get one for a song.

While I'm at  it I'll probably want to install and learn vserver as  well.

I don't know what "vserver" is.

ooops I should have said vcenter.   I saw somewhere a guy was running esxi 6.x on the Dell workstation below.  There around $300 on ebay and would seem to  work for a home lab.  I  would just hate to buy it, receive it, set it up and then find it would  not  run 6.x.  Wondering if someone would know if the T5500 Workstation would work?  Or some similar setup.

Dell Precision desktops were basically made with server-grade mainboards, and that particular one should work fine with 6.x .

"Jet engine" servers are a symptom of "thermal runaway" issues that come from the server's inability to properly diagnose from temp sensors any longer, so as a failsafe all the cooling fans run 100% to protect itself. Basically there is some sort of defect with the server, and many from "ebay" fit this category.

Thanks for info.  Below is an example of one of the VSAs that I need to run just to demo the environment.  Below on "System disks"  it says 250GB root disk and 10GB vNVRAM.  I am a newbie, can someone explain the 10GB nVRAM?  Would the Dell T5500 support this? Also would the Dell T5500 workstation be able to to run the 4TB config below?  The other VSAs that I need to run are similar to this with somewhat different requirements.

disk not detected to installing esxi 5.5

Hello,

I am trying to install ESXI on my brand new build. I got my system booting off an Optical drive with ESXI 5.5.0 in it. When it is time to decide where to install the ESXI, it does not detect any of the internal drives.

These are some of the parts of my build:

Intel Xeon  E5606 2.13Ghz Procesor

Supermicro X8DTL-3/-I/-3F/-IF/-LP

Seagate SAS ,Cheetah 5.1k Hard Drive 300gb

Do I need to add a driver to my ESXI ISO or something similar? Any help

Cheers,

Agus

Verify if the latest firmware version is installed and are the internal drives visible in the BIOS?

Also ESXi 5.5 is and old and unsupported version of ESXi. Any reason why installing this version?

Re: host random reboot

I just ran across this thread.  I'm experiencing the same problem (for 6 months or so now).  Sporadic reboots of ESXi 6.5.   I've updated to the latest firmware which includes BIOS 2.8.0 as well as newest ESXi 6.5 but getting the same random reboots.   Looking through the Lifecycle Logs in iDRAC I came across the "PWR2262" error.

I just changed my C1E and C-states to disabled as you said was instructed from Dell -- I'll see if that works around the problem.    Did this solve the issue on your end?

Home lab Internet access from new esxi host

I recently got an old Dell T5500 workstation and verified it can run esxi 6.7.  I'm waiting for hard drive to arrive so I can install 6.7 and then learn about VMware and then install some simulators from NetApp and EMC to better learn some new storage products.  I'll also create windows VMs to learn the latest SQL server etc.

Although I am familiar with with window servers I know next to nothing about vmware. That's what this  home lab is for  - to  learn.  Once I have esxi  installed I will need to get other software downloaded from the web to start building those  environments.  I'll have the 1GB ethernet cable running to my BGW210 gateway for internet access.  At this point the host will have no other OS on it other than esxi.  Is there anyway I can connect this host to the internet to start down loading VSAs and windows server etc.  Or do I need to create a Windows VM first to be able to get access  to internet?

Hi there,

You will need to build a guest VM in order to do this. You will also need another machine to access the console or RDP to this guest. You will not be able to see the VMs console (screen) without something else.

This means you will require at least a second machine for management of the environment

Kind regards.

I don't know why people can't admit that ESXi is indeed an 'OS', as you correctly put it.

Some think that the ESXi 'OS' can be keyboard&moused at it, as discussed here:

How to view the Guest OS (VM) screen on a PC with ESXi installed

If that is important to a home labber, it may be better to use VMware Workstation as I discussed here:

Is Workstation the only container available from vmware?

Once you have ESXi installed on your Dell box, all you can really do with its monitor and keyboard is either to give it an IP address, or see its DHCP assigned address. Contrary to static IP freaks, ESXi works fine with a DHCP address. Once you got its IP, you can pretty much disconnect that monitor and keyboard.

At this point your ESXi host is a headless appliance. Just like your home internet router, you will web into it and manage it with another computer. Your current daily desktop computer will do.

When I was new to vmware, I too made the mistake thinking I had to "download stuff into it". Yes, you can create folders inside ESXi's datastore, and load it up with your favorite zips and isos, but its moot and useless. Keep those on your low cost Tb drives that are already in your personal desktop pc.

When you create your first Windows VM in your ESXi, you use the Remote Console client (just like VNC Viewer, Teamviewer), mount your windows .iso (just liike PowerISO or the like), and go thru the install as you'd expect. Your Windows VM is a new install of Windows, and can get DHCP from your home internet router, create drive shares so you can drag and drop stuff in and from it, you can install Google Chrome on it, not worry about malware and trojans jumping out of it.

Have fun!

Thanks Dave, great info.

I just got my 2TB disk drive tonight and installed into the Dell T5500.  I did the Rufus thing and created a bootable 6.7.0 usb.  Booted on usb and installed to the new 2TB drive.  Plugged in ethernet cable to the Bgw210 gateway (or router or what ever this is from ATT Dish) and got an IP from DHCP.  Went to my laptop and went to IP address and brought up the beautiful exsi client for the first time.  I see the datastore1 out there.

I created a new empty windows 2016 server VM called win2016-eval and just used the defaults of datastore1 and VM Network.  Tomorrow I will download the windows server 2016 ISO evaluation from Microsoft site to my laptop.  Hopefully I can use that.  If there is a good link to help create/install my first Windows 2016 VM that would be great.  So once I have the ISO to my laptop I'm not sure how to make it accessible to the esxi host.  Do I somehow do that in the remote esxi client?

Thanks - Brad
