VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.0 - nsf41 client failed to load.

Hello.

I'm trying to install VMware vSphere Hypervisor 6.0 so I can study it by myself, unfortunately I get this error while trying to install it.

My motherboard is a MSI Z97I AC. I couldn't find any topic that could lead me to some sort of solution. And messing around in the bios didn't helped either

I'm looking for a solution, although I can't be sure there is actually one.

Thanks in Advance.

Hi,

The error nfs client failed to load is the symptom of the ESXi server saying that it cant find the drivers to load for the network device in your system. Not many cards are supported by the default shipped ESXi image. Thanks to a.p, you can use the utility http://www.v-front.de/2014/12/how-to-make-your-unsupported-nic-work.html

to make a custom ESXi image with the network driver loaded before in hand.

Worked like a charm, Thanks mate.

My adapter was the same as the tutorial. It's the most common or just happened to be the same as the tutorial maker?

Most welcome. Happy learning..

BTW,

It's the most common or just happened to be the same as the tutorial maker?

It is just that the video talks about Realtek driver which is the common network driver for most of the home desktops/workstations and the driver covers most of the device IDs under tat driver.

Cheers mate

VC memory stats show lower utilization than Windows task manager

I know this has been asked before but I was hoping for a good clear reason I can tell another group in IT.

VM is a Windows 2008R2 16GB RAM, 4 vCPU running SQL, SSIS,etc. SQL max limit is 12GB.  Lots of SSIS activity.

Windows task manager shows total RAM utilization with SQL Server engine using 5GB and SSIS and other processes using the rest.  CPU usage is moderately high.  Server is bogging down.

VC stats shows VM only using around 6GB and lower CPU usage too.  Big discrepancy.

Bottom line is VMware admin won't add resources because VC stats show much lower utilization than Task Manager.

How best to explain that VC stats don't tell whole story and we probably need to move host or something to have more shared resources available.

Anyone have a good clear explanation or documentation I can use?

Thank you,

Mpls DBA

The active memory that you see in vCenter is very misleading when dealing with db boxes storing content in memory.

The active memory is actually an estimate of the guest's working set based on a sample of the pages accessedwithout guest awarness.

Long story short, if you have 30GB of db stored in RAM but your instance only accesses like 2GB over the last 5 min (for example), ESXi will see only 2GB "active" so you'll see something like 2GB active + OS overhead.

See this article for detailed explanations, you can share it with your VMware admins. They should be aware of that stuff.

Has anyone copied above 3GB to guest and having good performance ?

...using harddisk locally  attached to host, and with transfers above 80MBs.

I've tried using an LSI RAID controller 9341i (SAS 3008 chipset), and using newest driver and firmware.

Tried all combination of RAID, non-RAID and setting the VM controller to use VMware paravirtual ....same result.

By the way I got the exact same behaviour using the onboard SATA controller.

When more than 2-3GB are copied in the guest (Windows) the harddisk latency goes crazy and transfers drops to anything between 0 to 30MBs.
It seems like some kind of buffer is filled up.

If I pause the copying a few second and resume, speed is regained for a while and then drops again.

To recreate this problem the transfer has to be no less than about 80MBs otherwise this "buffer",  or whatever it is,  will not be filled up quickly enough.

This RAID controller doesn't have have any cache memory, but ESX should still not behave like this?

And I'm using SATA disks....it that why? (they have 64MB cache and should be filled up long before reaching 3GB copying).

When using the RAID controller as pass-through I don't get this problem. But then I cannot have my Windows system in an VMDK file, right?.

And I assume I can only use the controller for one VM, right?

Using ESX 6 update 2.

Chipset: Intel C232 and C236 (tried both)

Esxi suddenly stops seeing my hard disk

I have esxi 6.0 happily running for over a month on a USB stick and I have an HDD as a datastore (nothing critical)

All of a sudden today I realize the datastore is no longer visible hence no access to my VMs. No reboot happened in between. It is a local hard disk

I change the bay of the HDD but still the same. I put another hard disk of the same brand (WD RED) and it is recognized immediately

The following commands display only the usb storage

"esxcli storage core path list" and  "esxcli storage core device list" do not show the HD in question. So esxi does not even see the disk

I can see the HD in BIOS

Can somebody help me troubleshoot this? I suspect HD failure (although it is brand new running less than a month) but I want to be sure

Regards,

Hi cgeorgia and welcome to the community!

Let's first try and determine what ESXi "sees" on the drive as you mention that the drive is detected within the BIOS. From the shell run the following commands and return the output for us to see:

ls /vmfs/devices/disks

This should return a list of disks that ESXi can see and given that the drive is locally attached you "should" see one of the format mpx.vmhba0:Cx:Tx:L0. If you do then continue and see what partition information is on the drive by running:

partedUtil getptbl "/vmfs/devices/disks/<disk device name>"

Trust this helps.

Hello ThompsG

Thanks for the reply. I have already done this and unfortunately there are no disks appearing on that folder apart from the usb stick (where esxi is running from)

There is indication that the esxi sees the hard disk ...

Execute Disable

Hi!

I have a Supermicro X9DBi-F motherboard that was running free version of ESXi hypervisor (6.0U2) since August. I upgraded my BIOS to last version from Supermicro's website (the only one available, actually). Afterwards, ESXi is giving me PSOD with message to enable "Execute Disable/No Execute CPU" option in BIOS. However, this option is already enabled. I tried doing a fresh install, but it gives me the same error while booting installation media. If I check with some Linux boot CD, /proc/cpuinfo has nx flag. I can also install MS HyperV 2016 without any problems. I already tried v6.0, v6.0U2 and v6.5 installation media (they all give the same PSOD during initial boot). I'm pretty sure the BIOS version is the only thing that changed, but unfortunately don't have previous version available. I already loaded default values in BIOS, but that didn't help. Anything else I can try?

ESXi Purple Screen: Unknown assert or illegal instruction hit?

Is there anybody who could help me?

Tried to Google it already but didnt find anything...

Thanks!

How to change driver in ESX (not update, but change)

I have en LSI RAID controller. (9341-4i)

There exist two different drivers the the device-id of this controller:

-lsi-mr3

-scsi-megaraid-sas

ESX default load the "lsi-mr3" driver.

How do I force ESX to use the "scsi-megaraid-sas" driver instead using console?

I guess I can uninstall the "lsi-mr3" driver package and hopefully the "scsi-megaraid-sas" will be used after reboot, but I would like to be able to change driver without uninstalling.

VSphere VM Network issues

We are having issues with VSphere only allowing 1 IP to be used at a time. Meaning only 1 VM has network at a time, usually the first one to boot. We’ve tried a few different things, lots of uninstalling and reinstalling, but to no avail. A bit more info on the VM's we are running, FreeNAS and Ubuntu. We have ruled out hardware issues and have come to the conclusion that there are some settings that need tweaking inside the VSphere Hypervisor its self. Also the exact same setup was running for months with no issues then one day all the Ubuntu VM's lost network, but FreeNAS still worked fine. We are stumped by this issue and didn't know where to go next, so any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you confirm if there is no security feature enabled on physical switch port where your ESXi host is connected? For example, Cisco Port Security can avoid more than one MAC address pass through a physical port.

ESXi 6.0 boot stuck on iscsivmk_StartConnection

Hi,

The context is, after trying to remediate my host that was non-compliant, I noticed that the remediation went almost straight to 99% then succeeded but actually didn't do anything.

So I proceeded to reboot the host in case something was wrong or a reboot was required.

This is where the problem is, the host is stuck in the boot sequence (see screenshot attached) and it doesn't move from here.

I run Dell blade servers connected to an equallogic pool.

Any ideas? I'd rather avoid pulling the plug...

hi there, I can't confirm whether or not this security feature is on or not, but its unlikely as the VM's were running for months in the exact same setup. just a bit more information were a running the server of a switch connected to a switch. Does this help you?
