The MD1200 is a JBOD chassis so ESXi HCL doesnt matter in than special case and only the H830 counts. Regards,Joerg

Get a NAS and use it as shared storage over iSCSI or NFS. Synology has some really good models for use in home labs.

It's local storage no matter how you slice it. Even with FreeNAS in front of it. Meaning if that host goes down, all your data is inaccessible. Not really a great position to be in.
