I've encountered this same issue. The only problem with me is my VM is on a VPN, so I can't RDC to the machine! I have found that if I go to another physical machine with vSphere Client and open a console to the unresponsive VM, the new console works. If I go back to the original machine, the console is now disconnected. Close out that window and open another console to the VM and it works.
