I have wanted to upgrade my 4.1 host to 5.x for sometime but have not pulled the trigger yet. Always thought that I had to upgrade vm's because I did not want to wipe them out and recreate fresh in 5.x. Upgrading, though, would not take advantage of some of the 5.x formating and hence felt caught in between.
On revisiting the issue, I have VM workstation and it appears that I can utilize VM Converter. My plan is:
- Use VM Converter to convert vm's on 4.1 host to workstation wm's.
- Since 4.1 is installed on USB, I would put in a new USB and install fresh 5.x and overwrite existing datastore.
- Use VM Converter to convert workstation vm's to Esxi 5.x host.
- Install VM Tools.
Seems simple enough but would appreciate feedback if I am on the right path.
Thanks for any suggestions
